Legos.
The sound of rummaging through a plastic bin of Legos still reminds me of my childhood.
I would sit in the basement with my 4 younger brothers as we worked together creating a city. There were roads, houses, cars, and trucks.
The city was alive and we were the ones imagining it all and bringing it to life by building what we saw in our mind’s eye.
Countless hours were spent in my childhood building and playing with Legos. It was my favorite activity growing up.
What was your favorite thing to do as a kid?
What was the one activity that brought you the greatest joy?
What did you come up with?
Playing outside?
Playing with your toys?
Drawing?
Do it Now
Whatever it was, do that activity right now! Don’t wait until tomorrow or the weekend because we can’t keep putting off making changes in our lives.
Make a commitment to do that activity today!
Using my example, I’d go out today and purchase a Lego set and go home and build it. Just writing that out makes me smile at the thought of building with Legos again.
Bringing the Joy In
The purpose behind doing this activity is to connect your emotions of happiness and satisfaction to an activity. There is a reason this activity from your past brought you happiness and by doing this activity again today, we can begin the process of figuring out how we’d like to make some changes in our life.
Activities that make us happy supply us with a powerful emotion. Happiness does amazing things to our mindset and we can build upon that mindset to create more meaning in our life.
When we create more meaning, we want more from ourselves and we can begin to make changes to the habits that aren’t working for us anymore.
Start Small
We don’t have to fix it all today. We don’t have to complete our Lego city in one day. We are going to start small and pick one thing to change and we’ll do that in small steps. We can’t let the fear of not knowing where to start prevent us from moving forward.
So go ahead, take out those old toys or build that fort or go buy a new action figure and connect with the simplicity and happiness of your childhood.
Doing this will remind you what you already know to make changes in your life. Do this activity and you will create more happiness in your life which will have a domino effect into the next step for you.
Doing this will eliminate uncertainty in where to start. Now you have an activity that creates a positive emotion in you that you can use as a springboard to change. Now you can’t say you don’t know where to start.
What was your favorite thing to do as a kid?
We’d all love to hear your story in the comments!
